The History Of R&B And Soul

Rhythm and blues (more commonly referred to as R&B) originated in African American communities during the late 1930s and early ‘40s. Evolving from blues and jazz, the genre would itself lay the groundwork for another evolution in music: rock and roll.

R&B became what it is today thanks to the efforts of pioneers such as Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin — to name a few influential figures.

Eventually, R&B metamorphosised into soul, a genre characterised as funky, loose, and joyful. Soul was profoundly influenced gospel music from the late 1950s, merging with the unique sounds of R&B to create something new. As the genre became more popular, James Brown and Aretha Franklin spearheaded soul music into the charts.
